Hot Weather, Healthy Skin: Our Top Summer Skincare Tips

Summer is a season that many of us associate with a radiant, sun-kissed glow. Some of us will absolutely be feeling ourselves as the summer sun brings back the healthy, golden tone that we so missed during the colder months. But many others will be struggling with the numerous challenges that hotter weather can bring to the skin.

From dealing with the discomfort of sunburn to excess oiliness and irritation, the summer heat can take a serious toll on the state of your skin’s health. That’s why we’re sharing our top summer skincare tips below, so you can enjoy gorgeous, glowing skin all season long!

Never Forget Your SPF

SPF is something that should be worn all year round, but it’s especially vital during the hottest months of the year. The sun’s harmful UV rays are at their strongest during the summer, which is why you’ll need to be extra diligent with your SPF usage.

Dermatologists recommend using formulas with SPF 30 or higher for optimal protection. If you really want to avoid hyperpigmentation and premature aging, you can go as high as SPF 50. Try to apply your SPF 15-30 minutes before going into the sun to give your skin enough time to absorb the product. Reapply every 2 hours, or after getting wet (swimming or showering).

Look For Lightweight Moisture

Heat and humidity can cause the skin to produce more oil, which is why many of us may struggle with breakouts and clogged pores during the summer.

Keep your skin clear and nourished by switching to products that are lightweight but still ultra hydrating. Stick to water-based ingredients like hyaluronic acidglycerin, and aloe vera for high levels of moisture with no heaviness. You may also want to seek out non-comedogenic products to avoid breakouts; these will have anti-inflammatory ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, and benzoyl peroxide.

Amp Up Your Moisturizing Game

This may sound strange, but you may find yourself needing to moisturize more during the summer months. We typically associate colder weather with dryness, but increased sun exposure, sand, and salt water can majorly dehydrate the skin.

Be sure to replenish your skin’s moisture levels by applying moisturizer and/or body lotion after every beach session, swim, or shower*.

*Pro tip: try to take cool showers during the summer, since hot showers can dry the skin out even more.

Add Antioxidants To Your Skincare Routine

Sun damage and premature aging is largely caused by the free radicals found in UV rays. You can counter their harm and protect your skin by incorporating antioxidants into your skincare routine — look for products with antioxidant-rich ingredients like vitamin C, ascorbic acid, vitamin E, green tea extract, niacinamide, and retinol.

Pro tip: Treat your body to even more antioxidants by adding them into your diet. Foods like blueberries, nuts, green tea, leafy greens, and citrus fruits are great sources.

Be kind to your skin this summer and get your most gorgeous glow ever by staying diligent with SPF, moisturizing, and choosing your ingredients wisely!
